Metal to the core baby yeeyayuh! Heavy Metal is one of those genres that nobody seems to like for some reason. In every work place you’ll find one or two hardworking metal heads that love to rock out. But you’ll notice that it’s everywhere in everyday life.
Music soundtracks are a great example. If theres an action scene or high octane scene then Heavy Metal is going to do the job. UFC have even commissioned Stemm to make them a song.
I’m a big metal fan, I grew up with it and it was a magical time of my life, getting to listen to all the riffs people were busting out, the guitar solos’, the drum solos, everything about it just made me want more.
The Origin Of Metal
Birmingham, UK, late 70’s- early 80’s. A band called Black Sabbath appear and gave a voice to the rise in unemployment gave young people a sense of direction and during this period of economic decline they would be considered one of the main influencers for metal bands all over the world, their brilliant rock status gave them the tools to lay the foundations.
As have many other forms of Rock and Roll, Heavy Metal reflected the mood of disenfranchised youth on the margins of society. Metal in Britain grew out of the same conditions as Punk. Speaking in a similar anti-establishment voice, both could be considered a form of protest music.
Over time, Heavy Metal evolved into a musical movement that embraced escapism and fantasy in a way that Punk did not. Dragonforce rings a bell here…
The Importance Of Heavy Metal
To it’s fans it’s a no brainer. Intelligent lyrics that make you feel like you’re not alone, brilliant musical scores and impressive levels of dexterity in order to play something so sublime are just some of the points one could attribute to it’s longevity.
Metal at its best is about freedom, its about the disenfranchised, it’s about not caring about who wins the prom king or queen and learning to live your own life as full as you can.
As I mentioned earlier metal is one of those genres that nearly no one likes but has such a huge following it’s never going to go away. It’s not just music, it’s a revolution. You know who the metal heads are, and they don’t care what you think.
